Highlight Diffusion Filter
De GR HDF compactcamera’s hebben een ingebouwd HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter) om zachte, diffuse expressies te creëren in highlight gebieden vergelijkbaar met een ”black mist” filter. Met het HDF filter kan de gebruiker een nostalgische, cinematische visuele expressie realiseren, afhankelijk van het onderwerp of de creatieve intentie. De standaardinstelling van de Fn (Functie)-knop is gewijzigd naar het AAN/UIT schakelen van de HDF functie.

Veelzijdige beeldsensor
De Ricoh GR III beschikt over een CMOS beeldsensor met APS-C afmetingen en 24 miljoen pixels. Deze grote sensor biedt niet alleen een perfecte beeldkwaliteit maar ook beeldstabilisatie en hij is zelfs onderdeel van het scherpstelsysteem. De van moederbedrijf Pentax afkomstige Shake Reduction beeldstabilisatie (via een ultrasoon trillende beeldsensor) levert een voordeel van maar liefst vier stops, waardoor je ook bij heel weinig licht nog kunt fotograferen.

Snel en scherp
De sensor is uitgerust met fasedectiepunten die samen met de contrastdetectie een snel en precies werkend hybride autofocussysteem vormen. De sensor is niet voorzien van een low pass-filter waardoor de scherpte verhoogd wordt. In kritische situaties zou er door het ontbreken van het low pass-filter moiré kunnen ontstaan maar dan kun je een functie inschakelen waarbij de trillende sensor het probleem verhelpt.

Kwaliteitslens
De GR III is voorzien van een vast aangebouwde 18.3/2.8 kwaliteitslens met een brandpuntsafstand van omgerekend (naar full-frame) 28 mm. Hiermee is de camera heel veelzijdig en inzetbaar voor de meeste onderwerpen op portret na. Wil je toch meer variatie in het brandpunt, gebruik dan de cropfunctie voor 35 en 50 mm, waarbij je respectievelijk 15 en 7 megapixels over houdt. Bij gebruik van de optionele GW-4 groothoekvoorzetlens heb je een brandpunt van omgerekend 21 mm. De lens heeft een minimale instelafstand van 12 cm, in de macrostand is dat zelfs 6 cm. Je kunt de camera ook bedienen via het aanraakgevoelige lcd-scherm.
